so i was wondering first of all how i find what kind of OS i'm running..and if i needed to upgrade it...would it be worth it...

4.5 is supposed to be coming out soon. As with anything electronic I wait and let the early adopters try out anything new and improved.
That way I don't have to deal with the nearly inevitable frustrations of bugs.

Options.. About. That will tell you your OS version. It will be something like 4.2.2.xxx most likely. The newest version for that 8310 is 4.2.2.194

You may not notice any big differences from other 4.2.2 versions.

Your other option is to find a beta of 4.5 and use it.. However, you will running a beta which could have some bugs.. I think a lot of people who run it are ok with it though. That would be the most noticeable difference.

I've been tempting to upgrade to 4.5 and have video recording capabilities, support for larger media cards.. but have been trying to hold out for an official release.

I have an 8310 & I'm running 4.2.2.184 but I'm waiting for the official release of 4.5

I'd try a beta version but I'm too scared of messing my phone up & I can't survive a day at work without it

You can always go to Blackberry.com & check for updates based on model & service provider.
