- Hi all, I recently ordered a Blackberry 8330. Awaiting its arrival. It will be my second try at using a BB. I tried a 8530 a few months ago, but there were a few features I couldn't get used to.
I joined this forum this time around so I can get the most out of my BB. I was wondering if anyone has some general advice for new BB users. Any tips, special features to take note of?
I've also been confused by themes. What's the difference between a basic, Zen, and Today? So far I like the look of the side docks, I think.
Sorry if I've asked silly questions or posted in the wrong area; please forgive a newbie! Thanks!07-10-10 06:57 PMLike 0 - Welcome to CB!
This forum will have the answers to most, if not all, of your questions

and my one word advice would be "search"07-10-10 07:01 PMLike 0 - let me get this straight. you tried the 8530 and couldnt get used to certain things, so you decided to downgrade to a, 8330 which is a much slower, older device? something tells me your experience isnt going to be any better than last time. you shouldve stuck with the 8500 series or something newer even.07-10-10 07:08 PMLike 0

- There's so much to learn here! Like someone else said, make the site search your best friend for awhile. Read or atleast browse through the forums for useful info daily. Themes & apps can be a lot of fun but I wouldn't get into them too much until you know your BB really well. Atleast well enough to know if something you've downloaded may be causing you an issue.

- I have the 8330. It is my first Blackberry. While it is not the newest and most up to date Blackberry I have had no problems with mine and I really like it. I found this very helpful.

- There are some pretty distinct differences between the 8330 and 8530. From a sales point of view, I am very disappointed with the Curve2. The original was MUCH more durable and had better battery life and that's just for starters. Ummm.... not to mention a flash on the camera...
Yes, turning the wifi off helps, but it seems the 8530 is a battery pig... could be the trackpad? Which I have yet to believe is a true improvement, at least compared to the 9630's "onyx" trackpad system which was a huge improvement to the "pearl".
The original curve is an excellent introduction to blackberry! I think it's a great choice.
(oh, and that a portion of 8530s kill themselves when Memory Cleaner is turned on... like omg u have got to be kidding... I DOA a Curve2 for various issues every second day for sure)
SOME ADVICE:
* Don't hit the red "end" button to exit screens. Use "back" and back all the way out, or use the blackberry "apps" (white and black dotted key) and select "close" to exit.
* Do a battery break (pull out the battery with the phone still powered on) - or holt ALT, SHIFT, and DELETE all at the same time to restart the phone at least once a week. Also, from your main screen, hold ALT and then press LGLG, then when you see lines of code, hit the blackberry button and select "clear log" once a week also.
* Hitting the blackberry button twice from your main screen gives you options, one of which is "switch application" and this will show all open applications. Remember, hitting "end" even from your phonebook, calculator, etc, will leave this running in the background, causing your phone to run slower.
When you first get your phone, go to options, advanced options, and then "applications" and look at all of the applications your phone lists. There may be things such as "russian and semetic character support" or "chinese character support" ... these can be deleted and help your phone operate more quickly. Scroll to the app you do not need, hit the blackberry button, and select "delete." Your phone will prompt to restart, but do not do so until you've deleted everything you do not want.
Most people only use EITHER memo pad OR tasks. One of these can go. Tasks is essentially memo pad, but with a checklist format.
Don't forget to use the desktop software (google blackberry desktop manager as opposed to the outdated cd you may receive with your phone and download it if you have not already. It is faster to google it than to maneuver thru the rim website I find...) and do a "backup" any time you make big changes to either your contacts, schedule, etc.
There are only 6 things desktop manager does, and three of which you will use for the most part. "Backup and Restore," "Application Loader" (which will allow you to update your software... every month or so try updating), and "Media Manager" (to get music, pictures, etc off or on the phone). Do not be afraid to use your desktop software!!!! Having at least one backup will save you one day!!!!
...and last but not least... DON'T GET IT WET!!! ENJOY!!!07-10-10 09:36 PMLike 0 -

Quickpull:

Instead of remembering to delete logs with LGLG, let your device do it for you.
LogMaid:
Superstore
Also I absolutely agree with using the menu to close out of ANY & EVERY app that you are done using.
However I don't agree with telling someone new to BB to go into advanced options & just start deleting things. There are some things that you may not think you need but in reality they effect other aspects & if you don't know what you're doing you could really cause yourself a headache.
Other than that you've got some great advice & some good links to get you started. Have fun!
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com07-11-10 06:17 PMLike 0 - Quickpull uses more memory than it saves. It also is one of the most problematic apps I've seen for users, and often ends up getting pulled off later when issues arise. Unless you pay for the full version, otherwise I think it's pointless... It uses the clock and runs constantly, so why waste memory on something like that if you don't have to. Check other threads, a lot of other users dislike it as well.
I didn't know about the logmaid/superstore app... I like this idea.
I only advised to delete the foreign character support, and memo pad or tasks. Clearly a new user is going to be too nervous to clear off anything else. Besides, application loader would fix any "oops" ... I should have said straight up not to clear anything else off, but thought it might be pretty obvs.07-12-10 11:54 PMLike 0
