If you turn off Dial from Home screen, you could use the "k" on your keypad when viewing the home screen.
Call Button > Menu Key > Options > General Options > Dial from home screen > No

You can also disable the keypad by going into standby mode. To do so, simply press and hold the mute key located on the top of your blackberry for 2 seconds.

Holding the */sym key locks keypad on a pearl. It is best to do the mute/standby button top it actually saves battery life and keeps keys from being pushed by accident in purse or pocket.

Just press the button on the left side of the phone (with the phone facing you). That's the standard auto-lock for 8330.
