    I understand the difference between closing an app and sending it to the bg--mostly. In the case of the "gang of five" that always appear in the switch apps menu, does it make any real difference? It would seem they are always running in the bg anyway.

    Yes, those 5 will always be running.

    Browser, Call Log, Home Screen, Messages, and Messenger are always going to be there.

    I reckon that's the distinction I was looking for: in the case of those apps, does it really make any difference (in memory and battery usage, mostly) whether I just escape out or actually pull up the menu and explicitly close them?
