Alright, hey all. There is a beautiful new crackberry in my house, and it is my job to set it up. I'm having a little bit of trouble making it do what it needs to do... Please help me out; I know computers, but I have no experience with PDAs beyond reading the manual and a lot of Googling.

    1) Exchange server email is fine. But as for personal Bellsouth mail, when I delete an email on the berry, it doesn't delete in Outlook on the computer, even after syncing. Is this a pop3 vs imap mail issue? Any suggestions for solving this problem?

    2) Has anyone else had success managing two calenders with one device, without merging them entirely? I don't mind them merging on the device, and I understand that they will, but the "work" and "home" computers communicating with the device must keep their respective calenders separate. Same for contacts. Is this possible?

I have seen other people ask this question and receive answers along the lines of "sorry, they will just merge." But that's not an option-- the work server in question is (for some idiotic reason I cannot figure out) public to everyone inside. Needless to say, for privacy reasons, merging home and work is definitely not feasible. I really hope that there's a simple way to keep the calenders separate. This was possible on her old Motorola Q by setting the sync parameters very carefully, and I hope it's possible on the Blackberry too.

    3) I am handling two email accounts; one is bellsouth & the other through an exchange server. On the desktop of the device I have a "Messages" inbox and a "bellsouth.net" inbox. Now, "Messages" has all email from both accounts whereas "bellsouth" has just personal emails. How do I either (a) make Messages only have exchange server emails or (b) create a third mailbox icon with only exchange server emails? I just need to keep them separate somehow.

Thanks so much for any help!!

    2. This is not possible if you're going to sync in BOTH locations. There is no rule, per se' that you can add to items to say, "don't sync with X PC". Make sense?

    3. With the new device OS, 4.2 they merge, automatically. What you can do is go to messages / options / general options / sms and email inboxes - change it there. BUT, doing this will give you MESSAGES (for your Exchange email) / Bellsouth icon (for Bellsouth emails), yet when you receive a Bellsouth email it WILL STILL SHOW in MESSAGES and the Bellsouth icon for messages, period. And, no you can't make another icon for Exchange emails...

    1. Are you on a BES? BES is required for email sync (delete, read, etc) unless it is gmail/yahoo which now offer delete sync.

I am a newbie and when I made my purchase I specifically asked and was specifically told that there is a way to keep them separate and the sales guy said he had an 8703e also.

Since the concensus seems to be that is not the case I (and you as well) am a little miffed as I was told that this could be done and there are many devices out there that you can keep the two separate as well.

I am going back to the store next weekend (I work in construction so I'm on 60/70 hour work weeks right now) and see if I can find out if the guy was confused or what but I'm going to be POd if I spent what I spent for this and it can't perform what seems to be a pretty basic separation of personal and professional.

I'll post what I find out...for now I'm adding my home email address as an attendee to all of my work appointments.

Well, it took a visit and finally a call to the "BlackBerry Specialists" but the explanation and advice I got was thus :

The BlackBerry is designed primary for messaging so it isn't designed for the personal assistant type usage per se.

The best option is on the computer that you don't want everything on, under options for the Intellisync, set it up as import only (everything is from the BlackBerry's perspective). You won't be able to sync changes made on the BlackBerry, so changes to work things will wind up only on the home machine, but it will get the work appointments, etc. into the BlackBerry.

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but it seems to make sense. Not what I was actually looking for but it should get the job done...

Sounds like a lot of work. Curious though, where were the "BB specialists" located?

It has been working, I just had to adjust the appointments that I had "invited" myself to from the office. It was just as simple as the setup for my home computer, I just set it to import only rather than sync for the calendar, etc.

(Synchronize --> Configuration Tab --> Configure Synch... ---> Choose --> and adjust the setting)

    U. S. Cellular actually has a separate tech support line just for their BlackBerry users with the "specialists". They walked through it very quickly, unfortunately the store was trying to answer questions they didn't know the answers to which killed some of my time but they were trying to be helpful.
