You can check what OS you have on your device by going to Options>about. As jhill has posted the OS you have will affect what size card is supported.

It depends on your BB's Operating System... jhill has the Operating Systems upgrades listed and what the max capacity each can handle.

If you have an 8310 from ATT then you running 4.2.2 so your max on a card is 4GB but the 8 is fine since you will be able to updrade to 4.5.0 soon.

As for why the OS has anything to do with it, something has to read the drive and the OS is what does. Its just how the OS is programed.

Upgrading the OS is free but at present AT & T doesn't have 4.5. You would therefore need to install from another carrier or wait for AT & T to released theirs.

My suggestion would be to wait and become more familiar with both your BB and the upgrade process. This site is a useful research tool to learn more about both those.

This would be worth reading BlackBerry 101: How to Install or Upgrade to a New RIM BlackBerry Operating System (OS) | CrackBerry.com
