    I know that this has been a repeated question so I am hoping that this post will get everyone to an answer without a lot of wrong suggestions.

    The answer is:

    go to options --> applications --> add-on
    delete blackberry messenger
    go on your phone to blackberry.com/messenger
    the phone will ask you to reboot, say yes.

    Problem solved!
