Mods, forgive me if there are multiple threads on this. But I figured since I've
pasted this in a few threads I might as well just start my own so we can link
    people to this instead:

Okay, for those of you that would like to get the old BBM back, here's exactly
    what you need to do.

If you don't want to switch your OS and keep the same, then that is fine. But
make sure you have your current phone OS installed on your PC. If you do not
you can download it from https://hookedontronyx.com/Operating-Systems.html. (Special thanks to CB member Tronyx for that).

Note: If you're running a non-official OS you need to delete the vendor file in order to proceed.
    Delete vendor.xml file. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

Now, do a full backup of your phone. Make sure you know where the backup
.ipd file is located. Usually before a backup it will prompt you to save it under
    "My Documents."

Now, on your phone go to Options>Advanced Options>Applications, highlight
Blackberry Messenger and delete it. Now here's the tricky part. Once you
have deleted BBM from your phone, I believe that you have just deleted
yourself off of all of your contacts' lists. But....

Now with your phone connected to DM go into the Application Loader. You
will now see "Blackberry Messenger" listed. Make sure it is checkmarked. Click
"Next" and DM will install the old BBM.

Now what you want to do is restore that backup file that you just made. Go
to "Restore" and it will automatically open up "My Documents" so you can
choose the .ipd file you want to restore. In this case, you'll restore the one
    you just made.

Those of you that know how to do an advanced restore will know all you'll
need to do is restore "Blackberry Messenger." The above is a more simple way
for people who aren't familiar with this.

    Good luck.

Note: Please remember that in order for BBM to show up in your AppLoader
you must have the OS installed on the PC.

There are countless complaints of messages not being delivered. I am included
in that group and will gladly be going back to the old one. 5.0 beta is way
    too buggy.

ok thank you for making a clear and easy thread about this searching through all the other threads and no one explaining it clearly enough was getting beyond confusing.....this will only work for OTA installs correct? thats what i read anyways lol ...if you did it through the DM youll need to completely reinstall the OS? or is that just hearsay?

You can re-install the OS. But you don't have to. Once BBM is deleted from
your phone the AppLoader will recognize that and give you the option to add
    it back.

In this case you need to reload the OS. Same thing happened to me. I used
JL_Commander to wipe, then reloaded the OS through DM.

Once the phone is wiped DM won't recognize it right away. In this case once
DM is open, go to the Application Loader and when you select "Add" it will
recognize the phone from there. Use the checkboxes to add the applications
    back.

I agree, the interface is incredibly well designed. Can't wait to see the official in action.

    The ones that don't work.

Good job and a great link. Those of our members that have done an OTA install and have experienced lost Messenger will value this clear and concise set of instructions.

Those that choose to install from Applications Loader already know the technique.

I still don't understand what you mean by an OS not working.

I did notice that even after deleting BBM and trying to get it back through
the app loader, it wasn't there. Even with the OS on my PC. So I had to go
through reloading the OS again. Either way, my phone is back to the way it was.

It appears there are some minimum OS system dependencies for the v5 to work correctly. That is common with most software, the actual release version should make it clear what is required for a base OS.

If I understand correctly, you installed the upgrade with Apps Loader, deleted it from your device and then found it deleted from Apps Loader.

That is a mystery, but nothing a fresh OS install can't fix.

No actually I installed 5.0 OTA, deleted it from the device and then got the
original one back from DM. Somehow the original wasn't showing as an option
in the AppLoader. But yeah, just wiped and re-loaded again.

In the link you provided, I have the 8330 but I only see the os for 8330 World Edition. Do I still use that one?

And also, am I supposed to save the file in a certain area?

In the 8330 section he made a slight mistake in adding "World Edition"

You can use the OS you need as provided under that section.

Download the installation and just run it. It won't prompt you to save it
anywhere. It will be available on your PC now for DM to recognize.

I received a messenger request and attempted to follow the link to download...but I got this error:

Sorry, your device does not meet the system requirements that are needed to support Blackberry Messenger for software versions 4.0 and 4.1

    I'm confused!
