On my Curve 8530, I can select/highlight text by pressing the uppercase/lowercase key. But, once I do this, any cursor movement either selects or un-selects text -- how do I "freeze" my selection on only the portion of text that I'm interested in, so that I can modify it as desired?

For example, imagine that I type something into a text box on the web browser (like the one I'm typing in right now), and then I try to select one word in the text to italicize it. In order to do this, I have to hold my selection on only that word, and then go outside the text box to click the "italicize" button above it. How do I accomplish this?

Have you tried choosing select from the menu key and then highlighting. When I do it your way and the menu key way the text stays highlighted when I move my cursor. Not sure why it doesn't work for you.
