Yes it works, look in your IM, Downloads or Applications folders.

    Or maybe hidden icons.

First, go into Options > Applications, check under Add-on's and make sure Blackberry Messenger has actually been loaded and the correct version.

Next, do a Show All... find the Instant Messaging folder and check in there.

Did you actually make sure it's the correct version number by clicking on it under Options > Advanced Options > Applications... also, what version are you using???

Also, do a battery pull: leave your device on, pull the battery for 20 seconds, put it back in and wait for your device to boot up.

Did you try to change themes???

Start DM... Application Loader... depending on the DM version you should see at least one version in the list... what version does it say is on your device?

This is about the only other thing I can think of.

I'm sorry, but I just have to ask this :

    Why not OS
I mean, you have the time to update your BBM, but why don't you update your OS first? .90 or .411 they're both unofficial anyway.

im gonna be quite honest here .90 was the first link i found i didnt bother looking for another

Well, since you're already using a beta OS, I think you might as well upgrade to the latest Beta OS. .411 is the most stable Beta OS for 8900, for now.

Though I must say this again. Remember, it's still unofficial, so you have to know exactly what you're doing, and do it at your own risk.

I agree with visualryan... at is point you are using a very OLD BETA OS, which may have other issues relating to your problem... either upgrade to OS or downgrade to one of the last Official OS 4.6 versions.
