I have a blackberry 8900 and I deleted my BBM a week ago and now my blackberry seems to last over 2 hours longer. Is this normal? Why does BBM drain so much battery?

Well its always open, so it has to use some battery, but I wouldn't assume that much. It may just be coincidence

If you have a lot of friends or groups on BBM then it will always be updating. BBM groups are a huge battery drain too.

    Battery drain? Insignificant.

The new BlackBerry Messenger occupies a lot of memory, but, like all BlackBerry software, it is optimized for minimum power consumption. There is no power being consumed except for sending and receiving messages.

Check out the specs. Each BlackBerry has two quoted power figures. The first is Talk Time, 4-6 hours depending on the model. The second is standby time, that applies to BlackBerry Messenger when idle, usually 12-20 days.

I heard on a podcast. Craig said that bbm doesn't use any extra power to run.

IMO, bbm is not different than texting so being without it would not be a big deal. I cannot see it draining that much battery though. I have 45 bbm contacts and 2 groups and it barely affects battery usage.

This makes as much sense as stripping out the interior of your car to save gas.

Memory utilization for me has improved since getting rid of BBM, but I can't speak for battery use. I never used it anyway, so it shouldn't have put any draw on it, but who knows. My battery does seem to last longer, but I can't honestly say I can track it back to the time I finally uninstalled BBM. I did it mainly for memory optimization.

When I first got my 8330, I deleted BBM from it, because at the time no one I knew had a BB. When I added it back on, I noticed no battery change, and the only memory change I noticed was just the memory uses to run, no leaks or anything to speak of.

The majority of the BBM battery drain is likely to be the screen backlight while you read and enter messages. The transmit part is relatively quick, in most cases only a few tens of bytes unless you are sending images.
