there is no way to answer this question. depends on the amount of text, if there are pictures, voice notes, etc.

if its a regular text message, around 160 characters which is about one sms?

if its only text, less than 160 characters, its likely less than 1kb. But also BBM 5 automatically checks for status updates, friend pictures, etc. You will have additional data that you cannot account for.

If you haven't physically upgraded, odds are you have the 4.6 BBM.

No, you should be on the older version of BBM. Are you on a limited data plan?

it's difficult to quantify the BBM; sometimes the BBM checks for updates making it all the more difficult to quantify the data transmission.

But even so, the updates should not be too huge in size, right?
Im going overseas and plan to use bbm for texting my pals back at home.
And thus do not want to incur any unwanted costs, but just the text messages in the form of bbms.

Many member have experienced travel with BBM. It does use roaming data, but very little in practice. The costs are far less then the cost of SMS messages.
