Here is the tutorial on how to do this...you have to have some experience with adobe photoshop if you don't its not hard to follow the steps.

    I'm using Photoshop CS 4

-Open a new document 150pixel by 150pixel 72 pixel/inch as your resolution or 240 pixels by 240 pixel as long as its not too big..

-Now look for your first layer. It will say Background and a lock beside it (by default this should be on your right bottom corner)

-right click and click "Layer from background" leave everything and just click ok.

-by default it will now say Layer 0

-Now right click the layer and choose "Blending Options"

    - Look for "Color Overlay" check the box beside it and Click the word "Color Overlay" to select it.

    - Set blend mode to multiply, set the color to white, set opacity to 0% Click Ok

-Set the Fill to 0% for the "Layer 0"

    -Create a new layer CTRL+SHIFT+N

-Type in the word you want to be in the picture make sure the color is White

    - From here you can use your imagination on how you want it to look like. so far if you want your text/object to appear when your contact highlights you on their bbm the text or object needs to be white in color. This is just a basic rule you can add color but remember only white text or object will appear when your bbm contact highlights you on their bbm(since the colored object appear already).

***If you go to "Image" located on on the top menu Choose "Adjustment" choose "Threshold" you can turn your colored image(like picture of you pretty face) into black and white but you will have to set the threshold level to how you want the image to look like.

once you are content you need to delete all the black color.
Use the magic wand tool not the selection and just click the black colors.

Select as much black color as you can leaving only the white part of the image by Clicking Select on the top menut and Choosing Similar.

You can do this more than once so it will grab all the black colors

    - To save Click File > Save for Web & Devices

    - Save it as PNG-24 make sure the transparency is check and matte is white and uncheck the Convert to sRGB

-Your done just transfer the picture you made to your bbm and test it.

If anyone else wants to add anything here please feel free!

    *Note

there may be other methods on how to do this. I pretty much figured this out in ten minutes so don't hate if there are other methods or you think there are easy way to do this. If there is an easier step please post it.

    Thanks

    should be something similar.

what your actually doing is trying to make a transparent image not in a GIF form.

you basicly want to do is a layer then a transparent layer. the first layer should have the overlay and the second should have the image in white you want to show.
