Is there some sort of adapter that I can buy that has one small piece that goes into the bottom of the phone and has a magnet, and then another that goes onto the end of a usb cable so it acts like a magsafe adapter?

Cool idea. I'd love one of those. I have a mag rapid charger for the Playbook and I cannot tell you how many I has gotten yanked away from the tablet. In fact the usb port is broken due to the cable getting yanked. Micro USB is so flimsy. So yes I'd love a mag adapter like this!!

Well the phone itself will need to have a magnet where the port is so manufacturers would have to be on board or you'll have to make an adapter of some sort.

Nope not at all. You just need a small connector that plugs in the usb slot on your phone and has a mag connector attached. No phone modification need. It's all in the cable.

Amazon is full of magnetic micro USB chargers. But has anyone tried one that they can reccommend or give advice to ones to stay away from? I like the idea especially on a fragile USB port.

Interesting product. It reminds me Playbook magnetic connection and external charging contacts on earlier BB (9700, etc.). May be I'll try one with my Passport.
