You can't backup Android apps. You have to reinstall them every time.

Load up Snap, search Backup, I selected the FIRST option listed which was free, launched it, it stated there was no SD inserted as even Android 4.2 has changed the mnt points, backed up all my android apps, then moved the folder it created from "mnt/sdcard/apps..." to "mnt/sdcard/external_sd/apps..." and now have all my apps backed up. I can also use Total Commander to copy all the "Installed Applications" to a foldser on the sd card directly.

Not to say that restoring may not need to be installed individually but at least I need not seek and hunt them after a wipe or install.

As a matter of habit, I save apk files for the Android apps installed on my phone to SD card without sideloading another app. I read the OP not so much as backing up apk files but the installed app themselves.
