I find it hilarious that myself and nearly everyone I know has used Android devices for years, yet the first and only person I have stumbled across who has been troubled with a Android ransom-ware app is a BlackBerry user. Go figure

Here I thought everyone knew not to download things from untrusted sources. All of BlackBerry 10's alleged "super-duper security" advantages kind of go out the window once the users get so desperate for apps/media that they download them from anywhere.

If I suspect anyone is doing any illegal or illicit activities that involve children I always report it. It is not illegal to view porn and I consider sites like Pornhub to be safe mainstream sites who protect and police their own content. The minute I suspect anyone delving in to anything malicious and that could even be thirty party advertisements on Pornhub I will report you. Child abuse is a despicable crime and must be eradicated from society but I fear it is something that is deeply rooted in society across the globe and must be tackled. I don't care whether you run a business, a teacher, carer, whatever. Just don't do it!

It would be an interesting experiment - before wiping your phone - to
try out some of the anti virus / anti malware software that is
available from BB's AppWorld. I have never much credence in that
type of software for BB phones.

Why not try Max Mobile Security and other similar and see
if it works. It will cost you $1.99 and cheaper than $500.00

I would be interested in your findings and possibly

I remember back when Direct Installing of .apks became an option, but before Amazon/Snap (10.2.1?); CB jumped all over it and started showing people how to load Aptoid, get stuff from 1Mobile, update from MobileMarket etc., without any sort of disclaimer. This thread is exactly why some of us said that was a bad idea, back then. Basically telling people it is totally safe for BB users to use these unreliable sources, because the Android Runtime is Sandboxed or whatever, is just asking for trouble. Most of these Android apps do have access to all sorts of your personal information (because the most used ones are themselves socially connected apps to begin with) and of course the more integrated the runtime becomes, the bigger the risk that unverified apps can actually lock your device like this, or intercept valuable information.

Reload the OS, stop using unofficial market apps, and stop using direct .apk downloads from dodgy websites. Then, with 99% confidence, I can promise you will never run in to this issue again.

To expand on what thurask said:
Perform minimal backup (contacts only) then a Security Wipe.
Obtain an Auto-loader for the OS you wish to load.
As you have already loaded a 10.3.2 variant, you will be restricted to which OS's you can downgrade too, so go with a freshly downloaded 10.3.2.440 auto-loader or higher.

After the reload OS is complete, fire the Passport back up and check Amazon App Store to see if the infection is cleaned.
Do this before restoring the backup.

This thread is about a trojan created by hackers to extort money from those not savvy or knowledgeable enough to realize it is a scam.
One can be infected by these trojan from any number of ways, on any type of computerized device, from any number of legit or non-legit sources. An ill set up internet connected device can be infected by simply being online in some cases.

Yes, child abuse and the illegal enterprises surrounding it is bad.
The trojan takes advantage of that in-order to trick one into paying money.

Just because someone gets one of these trojans, does not mean they are involved with or otherwise condone the abuse.
Please do not derail the topic.

That's not 'a fix', that's giving up. The equivalent of surrendering your property to an invader.

There is plenty of info about how to resolve this on Android devices.

IT DOES NOT JUST AFFECT AN APP. It's basically a popup over then entire Android OS. The only reason it seems like an app issue to the OP, is because the rest of BB10 is unaffected.

So the solution is to somehow emulate what Android users are doing (things like pressing the power button to force the modal OS restart screen to come up, or... somehow restarting the Android RT in 'Safe mode').

I tend to agree AnimalPak200, I would love to tink with it to see whats up.
But, its really up to the OP on that.

My thoughts are:

• It altered a BB10 file, the Android portion, to "infect it" - Unlikely.
• It added an Android app or Library, hooked to startup on system boot, to paste itself over top whatever Android app is running - Likely.

As the Android side of the BB10 OS doesn't auto-start up right away on a device soft reset, it should then be able to be "cleaned" as if the device were Android and had started in Safe Mode.
As the OP said he deleted all the Android Apps, except the Amazon App Store, which is flagged permanent, then possible its a hidden app or an app that appears to the OS as a Library file.

Yes, a Security Wipe and Re-load would fix that easy.
So, if the OP wishes to delve deeper, he should look more closely at installed apps.

All you have to do is delete the file that is causing it. But you'd have to probably spend an hour video chatting with someone to do it if you were not an experienced user.

I would try a "cleaner" app or something like that just for **** and giggles, not really expecting alot from it, but a useful data point.

Odds are you are going to have to wipe/reload the OS........and stay away from "renegade .apk files" ..........or let someone else try 'em firsts.......

Removing it from an actual Android device involves deleting the infected app in Safe mode, apparently.

BlackBerry doesn't offer that option for the Android Runtime. So even if you removed all the apps, chances are the infected files are still in the system, hidden from view.

If I thought that there was any chance to reliably and fully remove this without a security wipe, I would have said so before.

In fact I think even a security wipe might not help, the infection might be in a part of the runtime where it doesn't get deleted.

So then an autoloader is the only remaining option. Either way it involves reloading your device.

Why are you hung up on this?

It seems to be pretty well established that this person isn't really doing anything illegal, but the FBI warning thing is scam. I've seen it on Windows PC and it's just extortion and not really the government.

Then security wipe/BB Link restore/autoloader a new OS in.

And restore ONLY the native bits after that (as in the backup without the runtime and android apps previously created).
