I prefer seperated, and use only the "Messages" icon for emails, and instant messages. It keeps it cleaner if you ask me...

I don't know. I love having it combined. Just knowing you have a one-stop-shop for all your messages & notifications... To me, that means it's harder to miss a message, plus easier to clear notifications off the Home Screen.

With Home Screen Dialing off, I can still click N to get directly into BBM.
And with OS 5.0 & native Threaded SMS managed in BBM, that's all I need.
I have the free Qsms app that makes Q the Compose SMS shortcut from the Home Screen too.

it is called Blackberry Bliss and is from here, he has it for both OS4.7 and OS5. I am using the Weather with Hidden Today version:
