So I just got the blackberry pearl 8130 about two days ago so I'm still getting used to it, but I can't seem to get how to assign ringtones to certain people. I went to al my contacts that I wanted to have specific ringtones, changed the Custom Ring Tone part to which ever one I wanted, but still when they call it plays the default one I have set for the rest of the ringtones. What's wrong?

Does their name and number appear when they call? Does the number you have stored for the contact match the number they are calling from (including area code)?

Yes on both questions. Do I have to put a one in front of the area code for all my contacts? I don't know if that will make a difference, but I don't have any clue as to what else could be giving me problems.

Also - I would like to know if I can assign a ring tone to my text message alert.

Go to address book, click on particular name, go to edit, then from that drop down menu you should see add custom ring tone.

Click on the speaker (ringer profiles) when the list drops down, scroll down to advanced and click, then pick which one you usually use, such as normal, highlight it but don't click on it. Hit your menu button to the left of the trackball and scroll down to text messages. From there, you can assign ring tones and alerts.

For the custom ring tones, I did that, but it still plays the default tone when they call.

And I just did what you told me to do for the ring tone for my text messages and it just takes me back to my home screen.

I'm sorry, try it again. I had to edit my post.

Alright - thank you, is this also how I'll be able to assign custom ringtones? Or do I need to figure that out separately?

No you don't need the 1 in front. The easiest way to assign a custom ring tone is by doing what you did, going to the contact, pressing menu and selecting custom tune. Make sure you save it.

Another possibility is that the tune you are trying to set is not compatible.

How would I know if it's not compatible? They are just songs I downloaded onto my phone from my itunes.

Go to your address book, click on the particular contact, when it shows the phone number, hit your menu button and click on edit. From the drop down screen, click on add custom ring tone.

Most iTunes files are not compatible with BlackBerry devices because they contain DRM (Digital Rights Management) which prevents the file from being played back on your BlackBerry. Might want to do a search for tunebites.

Alright - so I would have to make my ringtones on here so that they can be used?

You can only playback files on your BB that are not protected with DRM. Do a search for that word I gave in my previous post.

I had to go into the profiles, advanced options, on the bottom there's the "use active profile except for" and then you click the names for all the people you have assigned a ringtone to. Otherwise you get the default ring, at least I did.

Thank you all for your help!! I think I got it, and if not, it'll just have to take a while for me to get used to using this phone. At least I have the important things like email down. Thank you againnn

Sunkast is right. The only way I know around DRM for itunes songs is to burn a CD out of iTunes and then to load the songs from that CD into your BB via DeskTop Manager. (DRM is circumvented when iTunes burns a CD of tracks that were purchased on iTunes.)
