I never had to modify the charging port on my 9630 Defender when I put it on the 9650. As a matter of fact, I ordered a 9650 Defender and I don't think they even moved the charging port. The OtterBox Commuter's the one that had the charging port issue. It seems the Defender's charging port opened up high enough since the 9630 version.
Charging ports do not need to be modified. All the ports and pins align the same. I tried it with my 9630 case now available in the Crackberry Marketplace for only $25 WOW!!
Just search, "FS: Otterbox Defender Case for Curve 8320/8330 YELLOW"
The charging port was definitely moved. Some cases had more latitude but in some instances, the case would not fit correctly between the Tour and the Bold (9650).

Are you talking about the Commuter or the Defender? Because I even confirmed this with OtterBox way back when they had issues with the Commuter's charging flap. And they concurred that the 9650 Defender did not need to be modified nor was it modified; except for the obvious keyboard cover. Trackball to trackpad enough said about the keyboard cover.
I had three 9630 Defender's when I got my 9650 and they all fit. I ordered a 9650 version for the keyboard cover, and now I can't tell the difference between which is which because they're all the same!
