I'd really like to stop my SMS msgs from opening when I take my BB out of the holster.

I use 3jam Threaded Msgs and have that open to view my SMS, so I don't need the auto-open feature when taking it out of the holster.

Any way to disable this? Easily or with a program that goes into the RIM software?

What profile do you have in use?

I have the same issue if the profile is set to "normal" and pull it out of the holster. When in "phone only", it dosen't seem to happen.

That got me thinking. I set the alerts for SMS to none and the alert for 3jam to audible, and no more auto-open. Thanks!

If you'll wait about 15-20 seconds it won't auto open. The feature is there for business users and power users who generally don't want to waste time figuring out what just came in.
