I read on one of the posts recently that someone was able to put the phone into the charging cradle and have it default to bed side mode....did I understand this correctly and if so how do I do it?

Don't know exactly your definition of "sleep mode", but:
1. Open the clock application
2. Hit the menu key
3. Go to Options
4. Scroll down to Bedside Mode.
You can: Disable LED, Disable Radio, Dim Screen.

Actually I figured it out by accident.

clock - options - When Charging: DoNothing: Display Clock: Enter Bedside Mode
