A lot of people recommend getting a 9000 holster as the 9000 is bigger.
Then a 9700 with let's says an Otterbox Commuter fits nicely.

I've never had an issue with the case scratching my device.

I find the cheap knock offs from mall kiosks do the most damage

Ditto. I used an old 9000 holster with my 9700 w/Commuter-fit great. I am now using the same holster with my 9800 w/Commuter. It's snug, but still works.
