Is there an advantage of using the RIM OEM car charger over a 3rd party charger or one for the Moto Razr?

My reason for asking is. While the motorola chargers (both home and car) seem to work for the BlackBerry the RIM chargers don't work in the Razr. On the Razr when attempting to use the RIM chargers you get a message on the phone that says unable to charge.

In my vehicle I was using the charger I bought for my old RAZR to charge my Pearl and didn't have any problems. Now I've upgraded to a Curve and was wondering if using something other than a RIM OEM charger would have any adverse effect such as shortening battery life or possible damage to the device.
