I know this sounds self-explanatory but how does auto on/off work and how do you set it up?

go to your options icon > auto on/off. The phone will shut off at the given time, and then turn back on at the given time.

I set my phone to turn off at 1am on weekdays and turn back on at 8:30 for example.

So that way it doesn't do much of anything during those times.
