3G is cheaper to implement on CDMA. Prob part of all CDMA radio chips now so they activate it. On GSM you have to put an additional radio chip into the phone to ge 3G. That would have increased the cost of manufacturing a little and they wanted to keep this puppy cheap. In a lot of countries like Thailand, where I am, 3G is still experimental and only on a very few cells. So adding cost for something that isn't used would increase the cost unnecessarily for many countries around the world. They want you to buy the 9700 if you want 3G. In the future the radio chips will prob get combined then all the lower end models will get 3G also.
