Can anyone with Rogers confirm their BT Tethering is still working on a Bold, with OS X on 10.5.6?

    Thanks.

It has been bad since updating to 10.5.6 but not impossible, I just keep clicking connect , on occasions it has taken 100 pushes of the connect button and sometimes it connects first time.

    I downgraded from .216 to .162 tonight to test. It's not 10.5.6. It's RIM. .162 connects a-ok every time.

so I thought it was the bb OS but then how come this works fine using my XP laptop with bluetooth ? It justs works fine, every single time. The phone displays "Modem mode enabled" and I am online.

it might be an OSX issue after all

    ok this is confusing.
after connecting fine from my XP with .217 and failing on osx (10.5.6) I went to a co-worker that had .168 working fine with 10.5.6.
added my blackberry, same settings = not working.

so it is the .217 but the question is why is the windows able to connect fine and osx NOT ? Was wondering what the modem init string that XP uses is...

I am actually still tethering with my BB Bold on 10.5.x

I wrote a post on it. Here is the link.
It will set up the Bold as the 8300 (I believe and it works absolutely fine for me)

If you need help, respond to this post and I will be glad to lend a hand

Ive been using these scripts on all of my previous blackberrys and they always worked fine. I redownloaded yours just in case there was something different (which a diff confirmed there wasnt). Still cant obtain an IP over the PPP link. I know this worked when I first got the phone, (on .167) so i can only assume that its a 10.5.6 update or something that upgrading to .210 broke

Well, that is just weird. I guess that I will not be updating to .210 anytime soon. Have you tried using a generic modem instead of one of the RIM brands? That is what I used to used until I found this script for the BB.

Just to update this thread, I pulled out my older Macbook 15" that has 10.4 on it and I experience the same issues as 10.5.6

Next step is to downgrade the OS on the bold to the original one it came with to test it, tho I'm not too sure I really want to do that as I have it all set up as I like it

This is still broken in the released version of .216 too..

As someone mentioned earlier .190 was the last version this worked on..

It appears to fail at the authentication part.

When tethering works (say on 4.6.0.162) the following ppp.log info is written.

    Thu Jan 22 10:54:02 2009 : sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x0 magic=0x0]
    Thu Jan 22 10:54:02 2009 : sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x1 user="web" password="web"]
    Thu Jan 22 10:54:02 2009 : rcvd [LCP EchoRep id=0x0 magic=0x0]
    Thu Jan 22 10:54:05 2009 : sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x2 user="web" password="web"]
    Thu Jan 22 10:54:08 2009 : sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x3 user="web" password="web"]
    Thu Jan 22 10:54:09 2009 : rcvd [PAP AuthAck id=0x3]
    Thu Jan 22 10:54:09 2009 : pap_rauthack: ignoring missing msg-length.
    Thu Jan 22 10:54:09 2009 : PAP authentication succeeded

When tethering fails (on 4.6.0.210 and above) the following ppp.log info appears.

    Thu Jan 22 22:20:31 2009 : sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x0 magic=0x0]
    Thu Jan 22 22:20:31 2009 : sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x1 user="web" password="web"]
    Thu Jan 22 22:20:31 2009 : rcvd [LCP EchoRep id=0x0 magic=0x0]
    Thu Jan 22 22:20:31 2009 : rcvd [PAP AuthAck id=0x0]
    Thu Jan 22 22:20:31 2009 : pap_rauthack: ignoring missing msg-length.
    Thu Jan 22 22:20:31 2009 : PAP authentication succeeded

Notice that the user/pass is only submitted once, and despite the msg PAP authentication succeeded, it actually hasnt.

I got it to work as follows:

    - OS X 10.5.6, all latest updates as of 28-Mar-2009
    - HW Dell Mini 9 (obviously hacked to OS X , works great, by the way)
    - Blackberry Bold app version 4.6.0.216, BES connected
    - Rogers 3G, $45/mo BES plan

The eventual huge difference for me was this post:

Your success may have something to do with BES.

But i can confirm that .2xx does not work with tethering on macs. There may be something with the drivers for the Dell that work that the mac BT drivers on Macs dont have that is allowing your success

Well, I may have spoken way too soon. It's not reliable. When it starts to work, it continues to work until a reboot of either or both the Mac or the BB. But, then it goes back to the PPP error issue and I'll be darned if I can get it connect again. Grrr.

I also had it working on another Bold with the same firmware i.e. 4.6.0.216 on the same Dell Mini 9 w/OS X 10.5.6 not on BES without the need for the APN to be set as above (i.e. blank on the BB in question). Not sure if that still works, but when it did, it was reliable (update: verified that this stopped working as well, :-( )

It's clearly not impossible to get this to work (I think this is key), but there is definitely something happening that is not quite stable. If we could collectively figure some more observations, I bet that we may be able to script something that increases reliability e.g. iterate on failed PAP AuthReq indicated by darkone338, which, by the way, I can confirm to be the same on my setup on the Mac.

Note that Bluetooth tethering with these two same BBs with the same firmware versions, one on BES, one not, has NEVER FAILED TO WORK with Windows. I am posting from that Windows tether right now. This is absolutely possible, just don't know how to capture the interactions between computer and BB to allow to compare Windows/BB interaction vs. Mac/BB interaction ... Anyone know how to capture DUN/modem interactions over Bluetooth from either?
