Thibaut was kind enough to guide me through the process. Must have bombarded him with 20 emails today. This post is coming through the bbtether internet connection. Pretty fast!

Key points to highlight besides instructions posted which helped make it work. (Seems most of them had to do with the uniqueness of the bold or at&t b/s)

    1. had to uninstall the blackberrysync software (did not use it anyways since its linked to exchange in the office)

    2. had to install ppp options through: sudo touch /etc/ppp/options

    3. had to run following commands:
    a. sudo cp bbtether.kext /System/Library/Extensions
    b. sudo chown root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/bbtether.kext
    c. sudo killall -s 1 kextd
    d. killall pppd
    e. killall -9 pppd

    4. ran berry4all in sudo i.e. sudo ./berry4all.sh

And presto! It worked! This is great - no more extra money for using data modem!

    Hello TCOLAR

I am interested in your BBtether app, is there any progress ? I use Ubuntu linux on my laptop, I have had my BB Curve 8330 for about 5 weeks, I would love to hop on the internet with my laptop without having to go to Starbucks.

I will visit again soon to see if there is a new post.

Is there any updates coming up, there is not much talking about this lately, I would really like to know how well it works and try it.

Recently got a Mac G4 and I'm going to try to use this so I can get online using my 8100 as a modem. I'll let you know what happens.

Why don't you guys google perishable press... I followed the instructions on that site and got my Curve 8900 to successfully tether via bluetooth, been using it for about 3 months now.

    Mac OSX 10.4.11 tiger

Sidenote: Don't get me wrong, I would definitely welcome an app that automatically done all the setting up for me like Tetherberry does for pc users, so keep up the good work building and testing these programs for us mac users.

    Hi Gift,

I think this method and Tetherberry use BIS/BES $aving you needing a data plan. i.e. no APN needed. I may be wrong. I was once before.

Seems to work OK. I managed to get through the install process and then connected to the Bold successfully. The interface / functionality could be improved a little, but as long as im connected to the net - im happy

    Hi: Two separate questions:

    1. I'm currently using for travel my Macbook G4 (Tiger) with a Verizon USB 720 plug in for data transmission. With phone and USB 720 my monthly bill is around 135$. Bought BB Curve and tried to tether it to my Mac and use BB as a phone as well as for Internet on my Macbook. Would save me $30 a month. Can anyone refer me to a vendor program or personal routine that they believe would allow me to tether my Macbook to Curve for Internet. I've seen so many work-arounds that I'm dizzy.

    2. I'm also looking at a Macbook Pro which has the capacity to run windows (bah) but would be able to read and set up the Windows software in the BB box. If I run windows off my a Macbook Pro and BB, will this have an effect on the speed of the data transmission, given I have a good signal)?

Okay, I can't get this to work with my Curve.

I uninstalled PocketMac and it acts like its dialing and connected and throws a bunch of messages on the screen but my BlackBerry does not show it being in tether mode and I can not use the internet. What am I doing wrong here?

Cut out the primary connect info.

i am looking to use a tether on my 8900 for tmobile which program can i download for free and is the speed any good. cause i was looking to get use verizons or tmobiles internet but if i can save some money and the tether speed is ok i will do it
    Hello there,
i'm the author of bbtether (opensource/free)
link: wiki.colar.net/bbtether_mac (sorry not allowed to post link yet :-( )

it's a small python program that allows to use a Blackberry as a modem (USB. not bluetooth = faster).
It has worked on linux for a little while, but today for the first time i got it to work on my Mac (tiger ppc but any should do).

Anyway if anybody is interested in trying it out and giving me feedback that would be great.

    A few gotcha's:
    - it does not work yet with password protected BB's.
    - right now it requires compiling libusb from source (using xcode tools), it's not hard and is documented on bbtether page, but you need to be comfortable with the command line.

Later i might be able to provide installers for all this rather than having to manually compile for for now that is what it is.

As far as i know there are no other working & free USB tethering solution for OSX, so i'd like to get some feedback and then i'll try to make it into an easy to use package.

    tcolar AT colar D.o.t net
    Thanks

I was looking to use my curve 8900 tmobile as tether to get internet to my lab top. i wanted to see if someone could help me in finding a free or cheap tether program and if anybody could tell me how the speed is on it. i was looking at getting verizon or tmobile internet but if i can save some money and still have descent speed i woll do it.
