Is there a silent button on the keypad you can hold down to silence your BB??

Or does it have to be done in the options??

i use the mute button on top of my Curve to silence the ringer. Hope that answered your question.

I think he means a button you can hold for a few seconds that will quickly switch the device into silent/vibrate mode. Unfortunately those functions are controlled by the Profiles menu. If you have a full QWERTY BB and you disable the dial from homescreen option you can quickly launch the Profiles menu by pressing F. Hope this helps.
