Is there a way to "clear" the home screen so that it's just the wallpaper with no icons?

I can't find a way but it would be nice to have just the profile adjusting icon on screen cause you have the menu key to pull up the full menu nice idea mention it to RIM see if they develop a upgrade for it

I have noticed that different themes have different number of icons on them so I wonder if you could just find a theme with none on it? I saw themes that have 10 on the home screen and some with just five so I assume its something you can specify in a theme design.

You would just have to search, themes with docks and zens have five on them usually.

Hide all icons and use shortcuts? Lol. Only way I know to do this. Maybe there are other ways, but I haven't researched or looked into this.
