Mmmm I'm new to Blackberry and all and I've been reading about software upgrades for Blackberry but I'm not sure if we have to upgrade it?

Mine is currently: 4.2.2.184 (is this even right?( and I have the BB 8320.

Do I have to do anything to it?

You don't have to upgrade if you decide to use the your BB the way it is. Upgrades provide enhancements and (some) fix OS flaws.

If you are perfectly happy with your BB the way it is, then you may want to consider leaving it alone. If the upgrade is buggy or installed incorrectly, you could have non-operative BB real quick.

If you have the Desktop Manager installed you could check for updates for you BB that way.
