On my BlackBerry 8300 Curve, the Home Screen lists six icons down the left-hand side, which appear to change as they see fit...

Can someone please clarify the purpose of these icons, and if there is a way to customize what appears on-screen (I want Facebook quickly accessible)?

You can move your icons around any way you like. Just highlight the one you want to move, click the menu button, and then click move. Put it where you want. Hide the ones you don't want to see. On the applications screen, any 5 icons that are in the upper row from left to right, will be on the left side of the screen when showing the home screen.

Or you could try the L theme and then have 5 on the left and 5 on the bottom.. But you will still have to move them as emptydarkone suggested to get them as you like them.
