I guess I'll start this like an introduction at an AA meeting:

I'm Allen, 23, a professional in corporate bankruptcy and I just purchased my first blackberry tonight, a bold, and it's already giving me issues...

At the ATT store, i setup my email and it was sweet to get it and have it work, then i got home and all of a sudden i got some crazy app error message and had to restart the 'berry and I lost the "speaker" icon in the upper left corner of the home screen and my email access icon and browser icon disapeared, so i pulled the battery (after realizing there wasn't a software reset) and got everything back... installed aim and facebook, hopefully it all stays now but what could be the cause of my problems? did i get a bad berry? should i return it?

Mind you, this is my first ever smart phone and I'm pretty technology savvy but I never expected to run into technical difficulties 5 hours after buying the thing!! Thanks for your help!!

edit: 5 seconds after typing this mesage, I checked my 'berry and i had the same error message, a white screen with "app error 523" and "reset" underneath, i clicked the scroller and it restarted, no email, no aim, no facebook, whats going on!?!?!?!?

Either wipe the phone and reinstall the device OS... or exchange it before you go to all that trouble.

    AT&T official OS http://forums.crackberry.com/f83/new...0-167-a-85436/

And for when you are wanting to live a little and upgrade... then: http://forums.crackberry.com/f83/new...0-185-a-93242/

Here's some more threads that are good on the procedure:

Here's the way I used to do an upgrade:

I followed the JLcommander Wipe and deleting the vendor.xml procedure.

    http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-...l_cmder-53502/

The way I do it now, quicker but more decisions to make:

    Using CrackMem... http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/cra...eleased-52044/

CrackMem you choose the delete Vendor.xml in the process.

    Procedure for upgrades is:
    1. Uninstall the older version from the PC
    2. Install the newer OS to the PC.
    3. Change the theme on the device to carrier default.
    4. Run CrackMem, make desired changes
    5. Close CrackMem.
    6. Run Desktop Manager.
    7. Plug in BB
    8. When prompted to upgrade, click OK
    9. Choose "Advanced", so individual OS changes can be made.
    10. Begin

During the upgrade, the device is wiped.
