Trip up the coast of the ever wonderful USA was uneventful. Carrying several wireless-capable devices and found no real problems.

There were dark areas of Northern California & Oregon where even the vaunted VZW failed us. AT&T phone performed well, too - but lost signal more frequently.

Spent the night outside of Vancouver, BC, far away from the 110+ degrees of my Sonoran Desert home. Was up early for a drive to Kelowna, where we have again put down stakes. Lost signal for both carrier devices for a total of about 30% of the trip - VZW won big here as some of the GSM coverage areas, while showing a bar or two had too much noise to be usable. Overall, though, each carrier left us without signal for no more than 10 or 15 clicks at a time, while on the main highway.

And please remember that where we are is no indication of VZW or AT&T service - rather it is an indication of technologies, as neither VZW, nor AT&T, offers Canadian service.

An interesting note - our BlackBerrys lost signal first, while the non-smartphones, Samsung & Nokia devices held on longer - in some cases, as much as a click or more farther, with the Wilson amp off. With it on, results were more closely matched, as when the rooftop lost signal, the service inside drops like a rock.

For those of you not versed in the Canadian lexicon, a click is a click of the odometer - up here, they use kilometers.

Another note is that we found almost nothing in the way of a WiFi signal. In the CG here, as in many like it, they offer password access WiFi Internet, but the cell signal is present, too.

Anyway, it is time to head for dinner. The lake is gorgeous and the air is crisp. If it didn't get so cold up here & if they would kill off socialized medicine & Canada's recent penchant for speech control, I could see myself living here. Until the first sign of snow.

    Be back later.

On the way home swing down through Montana and Wyoming and see how well your ATT phone works. You'll have full 3G for close to 1000 miles on big red but ATT will depend on Cellular One and Union Tel snail speed edge for signal the whole way with some places nothing at all.

ATT has a HUGE coverage gap this part of the world and ATT, Tmobile subs get really inferior when they are out in the middle of nowhere and they don't have any signal.

Not the kids. The tourist drivers, especially the ones in the rented slum houses (rental motorhomes) on wheels.

I don't know who ever thought it a good idea - take someone who grew up around small Fiats, Renaults & Simcas in crowded socialist countries & toss them into an overpriced & undermaintained 30' Cruise America rattletrap - bald tires, inop lights, etc. - & send them on unfamiliar mountain roads.

This morning, a Euro couple missed negotating a curve not to far out of town - in a rented Toyota - 150ft down a steep embankment. Imagine 30ft of RV ithe same hands.

Then again, they may be cursing us, too. Even though we know the area and our rigs, this convoy is nine strong - all are towing with each rig close to 60ft long. Getting past us can be daunting, even when we pull over for them.

Anyway, while the travels up here were interesting with our mobile communications, getting off the major roads makes cell calls challenging. So far, I can tell GSM has not only NOT made improvements up here, they may have regressed. GSM coverage in Kelowna is spotty. Out of town, it goes away - a condition we've seen throughout the rural western regions of the continent. CDMA is so much more reliable, especially in the areas where signals are hovering on both sides of -100dBm - most of the area, actually.

And, we leave the CG & all Wifi goes away. Many of these folks may have Internet, but they have but one computer or are hardwired, so no wireless routers. In fact, once we left Vancouver, we've seen almost no WiFi and have relied either on the technologies of Wilson or Hughes for computer signal.

So as we play more, you'll hear more. Right now, I need to contemplate putting up to $1000 worth (or maybe more - the price varies) of diesel/LPG in my rig at each fuel stop.with the grades & such, that is more frequent than some might think. At least the station owners are happy to see us.

Ha ha I agree with you on that, living in the northeastern part of wyoming we have all kinds of people coming in asking why their ATT/Tmob/sprint phones wont work and where the nearest agent for on of them are, yeah over like 250 miles easy for the closest one I belive.

Sounds like a good time, Twins. I went to school in B.C., Vancouver and Squamish to be exact. I spent lots of time at Whistler, and Lillooet when I needed some sun. I always tell my wife that B.C. is one of the most beautiful areas on the planet, I really do wish I could buid a house somewhere in that Province.

As far as losing a signal in Oregon, where exactly? Im in Astoria and I havent experienced problems on the 101 (at least as far down as Tillamook).

I used to live in Jackson, WY., its a fun town. (Not sure if you're headed there) The Tetons are some of the best mountains to look at, just dont get run over by a buffalo! Enjoy your trip, Im jealous.

I was just there for the 4th of July. We stayed in a condo in Teton Village

Not sure why you would want to move away from a place like that

Teton Village is alot of fun, I liked the movies at night out on the grass, right behind the lodge. Jackson is a great place, Ive been lucky to live in a few really cool spots, as a snowboard bum. Vail, Mammoth Lakes and Alaska just to name a few. I got married and now have a kid on the way, and my wife is in the Coast Guard, so here I am on the Oregon Coast. This is a really nice spot as well.

We were north of Crescent City & south of Coos Bay is where we had some issues. It seemed to be more because of the geography than anything else, as you could be great signal, then nothing, immediately followed by great signal again. We also found some service shortages on the backroads toward Klamath - mostly around 199 & 66. Good stuff though around Medford & Grants Pass.

That is always a beautiful loop, but some areas are not very RV friendly.

The area here is rather rural - most of the communities that appear large on the maps are actually very small. Many have cell service mainly because of tourists. There are tons of them here - in our CG, it seems English is the third or fourth language, behind German, Dutch & French. Yet the CGs are nowhere near capacity. Last time I was up here, it was wall to wall motorhomes, three-fourths ugly rental units. We have several spaces open, to separate our units from others & the CG is only about 50% full.

We've been doing some hiking, cycling & generally just knocking around. As expected, we have a number of areas where signal is sparse - especially when we get off the beaten path.

Food & fuel is expensive, but the locals are delightful. Most are very familiar with where phones work & don't work. Signals range mostly on the bad side of -80dBm, but they are usable. More complaints from the troops on GSM phones - those with quads say they are on CDMA more often. Many of the Euros surprised when we have phones that work, while they are dropping calls. In some areas, we are dropping calls too, but we try to not let them know.

After spending a day in Kamloops, today in Prince George. The trip, while always gorgeous was uneventful except for cell coverage - mostly non-existent, except for sporadic coverage until our current stop.

I am planning on taking the next few days just to vegetate while we wend our way toward Whitehorse.

I have to vegetate - while I've been here too many times, most of our carvan has not. Rotten tourists, I tell ya.

Still looking for reliable WiFi coverage in non-cell areas.

That I already knew - it will actually be nice. We have shortwave & satellite, just in case. Although with multiple vehicles, plenty of food, two doctors, a dentist, a Christian evangelist, a software developer & a few telecom engineers along in our caravan of close friends, we'll probably be okay.

Just was forced off the phone with the big guy. It wasn't by either of our choice, but he is heading into a radio twilight zone., as he called it.

When I called him, he'd just taken the wheel again. Medications prevented him from driving earlier today.

They'd spent some extra time just knocking around and today they were exploring on their way to Deese Lake. He says he thinks they will be able to communicate once there, but isn't 100% certain. Mobile service has been spotty anyway.

All I know is it would have been nice to have scored some time off to have joined them.

So if we don't see him here for a day or two, you know why. Knowing him, I'll get a call late tonight on satellite and he'll claim he hung up on purpose or something like that. He can't be too mean to me, since I have one of his dogs and keys to his house.
