07-15-09 08:00 PM - Ha ha I agree with you on that, living in the northeastern part of wyoming we have all kinds of people coming in asking why their ATT/Tmob/sprint phones wont work and where the nearest agent for on of them are, yeah over like 250 miles easy for the closest one I belive.On the way home swing down through Montana and Wyoming and see how well your ATT phone works. Jackson is a great place, Ive been lucky to live in a few really cool spots, as a snowboard bum. Vail, Mammoth Lakes and Alaska just to name a few. I got married and now have a kid on the way, and my wife is in the Coast Guard, so here I am on the Oregon Coast. This is a really nice spot as well.I was just there for the 4th of July. We stayed in a condo in Teton Village
Not sure why you would want to move away from a place like that
07-16-09 11:50 PM - We were north of Crescent City & south of Coos Bay is where we had some issues. It seemed to be more because of the geography than anything else, as you could be great signal, then nothing, immediately followed by great signal again. We also found some service shortages on the backroads toward Klamath - mostly around 199 & 66. Good stuff though around Medford & Grants Pass.
That is always a beautiful loop, but some areas are not very RV friendly.
The area here is rather rural - most of the communities that appear large on the maps are actually very small. Many have cell service mainly because of tourists. There are tons of them here - in our CG, it seems English is the third or fourth language, behind German, Dutch & French. Yet the CGs are nowhere near capacity. Last time I was up here, it was wall to wall motorhomes, three-fourths ugly rental units. We have several spaces open, to separate our units from others & the CG is only about 50% full.
We've been doing some hiking, cycling & generally just knocking around. As expected, we have a number of areas where signal is sparse - especially when we get off the beaten path.
Food & fuel is expensive, but the locals are delightful. Most are very familiar with where phones work & don't work. Signals range mostly on the bad side of -80dBm, but they are usable. More complaints from the troops on GSM phones - those with quads say they are on CDMA more often. Many of the Euros surprised when we have phones that work, while they are dropping calls. In some areas, we are dropping calls too, but we try to not let them know.

Although with multiple vehicles, plenty of food, two doctors, a dentist, a Christian evangelist, a software developer & a few telecom engineers along in our caravan of close friends, we'll probably be okay.

When I called him, he'd just taken the wheel again. Medications prevented him from driving earlier today.
They'd spent some extra time just knocking around and today they were exploring on their way to Deese Lake. He says he thinks they will be able to communicate once there, but isn't 100% certain. Mobile service has been spotty anyway.
All I know is it would have been nice to have scored some time off to have joined them.
So if we don't see him here for a day or two, you know why. Knowing him, I'll get a call late tonight on satellite and he'll claim he hung up on purpose or something like that. He can't be too mean to me, since I have one of his dogs and keys to his house.

It's one of the parts of my vacation I enjoy the most - no cell coverage where we camp every summer unless we go into town.Just heading into radio twilight myself gonna be out of signal all weekend. Some people in the cities are shocked to hear that such places exist
