This weekend I was in the states and at a sprint or verizon store I saw buy one get one free on blackberry.. So I was wondering can I buy one outright with no contract, get one free and unlock them and use them in canada?

Verizon WILL NOT sell you a BlackBerry without a data plan. And
they WILL NOT allow you to cancel the data plan.

Further, most VZW phones are straight up CDMA devices and
cannot be unlocked at all.

thats a promotion for new contract, you will have to pay full price to not have a contract i believe, thats how it is with sprint
