So, I'm on the line with ATT. I asked them for the unlock code for my phone, and she says she's doing a "ticket" or something, and will e-mail me the code.

What I'd like to know is, is this forever? In other words, if I reupgraded my firmware or wiped the phone, would I need to unlock it again, or does this go deeper than firmware.

I hope they give it to me! Or, perhaps jail for asking!

They sent it to me! . My phone's unlocked now! Oddly, after I did it, I got an att text message offering telenav. It's almost like they see it as a new phone.
