I have just up graded to a 8900 and everything seems to be going well, (battery life a bit poor but can deal with that)
I am working in america over the summer and want to use my blackberry with an american sim (to keep costs down and with all the bb features) when i spoke to O2 about unlocking it the lady said it would take up to 28 days and 10 which was ok, but then she spoke to her manager and i was told that wouldnt be possible! until the contract is over!!! ive had the contract 8 days, and been with o2 over 8 years!!!! I guess they think that i'll stick in a cheap PAYG sim but thats notthe case at all, will only require it for a few months!!!!
Can anyone suggest a course of action, am thinking of cancelling the contract and going to another carrier as this is quite a big deal for me. I dont want to unlock it through a high street independant phone shop as it will void the warranty, am i correct on this??
if your provider won't unlock your phone, there are third party websites that will unlock your phone for a fee, not sure how much, just google unlock sim and you will find someone who can do it.
I've never tried a 3rd party site but i'm sure someone here has.
good luck
I went to one site I think was called gsm unlock I'm not sure but I unlocked my storm for 44 and it took only 6 hrs to get the code but tmo should give u the unlock code.

No unlocking your phone does not void the warranty. It is done through using the IMEI and it is the same difference if a small phone shop unlocks it and if a carrier such as T-Mobile unlocks it. The reason carriers lock phones is so that someone from another carrier is not able to just pick the phone up and use it on their service. It is a way to get people to sign up for one carrier versus the other. However, after unlocking a phone you can use it with other carrier sim cards and prepaid international sim cards. It doesn't harm the phone in anyway, and does not void the warranty.
if you find a way to "open a case" or something to that effect and tell them what you want and send them the IMEI. They should send you an email the the unlock code and the steps to do it.
There are services prolly in your hometown where you can go and they can "flash" your phone over to whatever service you want. But the downside is that you'll lose your settings to MMS and things like that. When I flashed a phone over to Tmo, I called them and they gave me the settings to fix it, but my IM never worked...I called the phone manufacturer and they said that "this happens sometimes" when you unlock a phone.
It should be free. It's not illegal and Tmo (or whoever) should give you the info for free...
thanks for all the quick replies, had the same msg on o2 forum for nearly a week without a single reply!!!!
i thought id chance my arm and rang O2 for a second time and spoke to a different person who couldnt have been more helpful... unlock code on its way and at a cost of 10

i just did the 48hour promo! less of a hassle than calling t-mobile up like i did with my 8900 and 8320.. now i got an unlock code for my sissters 8320
Will Unlocking the phone cause it to lose settings (email, applications etc)? Will my carrier (Rogers) know that I did it, and will it cause any issues with my phone plan itself? Once it's unlocked, is it simply a matter of getting a different SIM card to switch to a different carrier?
I know T-Mobile provides the unlock code only after using the phone 90 days. I am curious, however, how and where do these companies get the unlock code? If I get the unlock code for my phone from these companies and also from T Mobile, will these unlock codes be the same (number)?
Yes they will be the same unlock code. There is one unlock code per device and it is generated from the IMEI number. The IMEI number is unique for each device.
