I'm new to smartphones, and I've seen the threads mentioning 'unlocking' phones. Forgive my ignorance, but what does this mean and what does do for phone utility?
Thanks!

A locked phone will only accept a SIM card from the carrier that sold the phone. This means if you have an AT&T Curve 8900 that is locked, an AT&T SIM card is required to use the phone.
An un-locked phone will accept any SIM card allowing you to move from carrier to carrier with the same phone.
Its also super easy to do on a BB. Just enter the unlock code and POOF! Your berry will accept any SIM!

Got it. Thanks for the responses, everyone.
You say that now but believe it or not, people actually do screw up the process and permanently lock their device.
I automatically unlock any new phone I get immediately after I get it as a matter of general policy.
If I travel overseas, I want to be able to use any carrier of my choice and you can't do that if your phone is locked to your existing carrier.
