No. The 8830 only runs on CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) in the US and can operate on non US GSM Frequencies (Europe, etc). The US uses different GSM frequencies then the rest of the world and the 8830 WE is not capable of using the US frequencies. If you search, you will find many many threads detailing this.

I just recently got a BlackBerry 8830 from a friend. He was with Sprint in America, and now I'm in Canada. I got the MSL code and the ESN number but don't know where to go from here. Any help is appreciated, or even if you could suggest a direction for me, that would be great.
understand that it won't work here in the states but can you unlock it before you go overseas?
You should be able to buy a local sim card overseas and pop it in and use it if it's a Sprint phone. They come already unlocked for being able to do that.
