I talked to an engineer today,Who works with Tmobile and he told me that Tmobile is planning on using their 2100Mhz 3G service for both upstream and downstream in the next 6months to 1 year. That Tmobile only acquired the 1700Mhz band so they could enter a contract for roaming with the Japanese.
Forgive me if I didn't word this right ,He was speaking a language I didn't understand,But I thought I would share it here and see if makes sense with any of you all.

Basically what he told me was that in the near future devices such as the iPhone and other 3G enabled devices would work on Tmobile USA.

That would be fantastic, but I'll believe it when I see "3G" on my Bold here in the US.

Very cool. That is pretty exciting because it means that a 3G BB will be coming too inevitably. Maybe a 2009 launch of Onyx/Driftwood is eminent afterall.

That would be great. So many phones already have support for the 2100 band already. Maybe I'll switch back to T-Mo if that really happens.

Sorry if this a dumb question but how will this affect current 3G tmo phones? Will they be able to use the new frequency? And does this whole change mean that tmo will drop the old frequency or will just use both?

I doubt that there has ever been a single GSM 3G phone sold that did not work in the 2100 band. It's used in just about every country in the world, and the T-Mobile 3G phones sold to date have had 1700 and 2100 functionality.

It is not a true statement, especially if you are not only referred to tmobile's current line up. There are so many ATT's 3g phone don't have 2100 band. Some of Nokia NAM version phones only have 850/1900 bands

Is T-Mobile's 2100 the same 2100 that was supposed to be off by a few megahertz from everyone else's 2100 back when they first got it? Did they change that or does it still mean 2100 for T-Mobile (US) is different then 2100 for Europe/Asia/Wherever?

That Sumsung phone uses the 2100 band to download (being designated as Band IV). It would surprise me if they made a phone that couldn't also upload on that band, too. But maybe they did.

Don't the old ones use 2100mhz? (Specifically, 2110 - 2155mhz on the upload, and 1710 - 1755mhz on the download)

That engineer apparently needs to speak to the FCC, and should possibly read up on what the difference is between UMTS Band IV, and UMTS Band X.

I really wish I could post links, because some of you need to read up on the basics of how the AWS band works, and why the Euro UMTS 2100 band isn't available in the United States for 3g use.

Sorry guys, Tmo didn’t pay billions for AWS just for 'japanese roaming.' The BB Driftwood will support 1700 AWS later this year when it launches.

This bit of text, albeit from wikipedia, suggests otherwise:

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2100 MHz UMTS spectrum allocated in Europe is already used in North America. The 1900 MHz range is used for 2G (PCS) services, and 2100 MHz range is used for satellite communications. Regulators have, however, freed up some of the 2100 MHz range for 3G services, together with the 1700 MHz for the uplink. UMTS operators in North America who want to implement a European style 2100/1900 MHz system will have to share spectrum with existing 2G services in the 1900 MHz band.

Holla North Chuck. I have lived there too. I am currently in Dunes West. I am originally from Saint Stephen, not sure if you've heard of it. Just a click away from Moncks Corner. Left after graduating HS, swore I would never come back, but who doesn't love the lowcountry? Just glad T-Mobile is here now, although they have problems too.

I talked to T-Mobile about replacing my Pearl Flip that I had multi exchange for my 3rd replacement dash, and they offered $100 off the new Dash 3G. I was like 3G, what's that, at least not in this part of the country.

Do they have groups on this site, like a group for SC, or southern states? Glad to see a Lowcountry native on here as well Fried Rice. Peace.
