On todays Cnet.com front page, they review a new 3g tmobile phone. They comment that 3g must be coming since its the second 3g phone...I would love a 3g pearl 2!
That's all well and good, but the curve is not compatible with the 3g network, which would mean a lot of upgrading for current curve users and 3g will be underutilized for some time. But I'm sure tmo is prepared for and accounted for that also

T-Mobile is very secretive about their launch plans for 3g service. There are two devices right now, Samsung T639 and Nokia 6263 that are UMTS (3g), that T-Mobile is selling. They are not marketing them as 3g data phones; they are using them for capacity in some of the major markets like New York. Eventually they'll roll it out nationwide and increase the selection of phones.
Anyone with frequency and radio experience know if it's even a possibility for a handsets radios to be altered via OS upgrade to work with a 3G network?
I love the curve but would have held off a few more months if there was a known rollout date for the 3g network.

I don't know that much, but what I'm told is for the phone to work on the umts 1700 band it would require that radio in the phone, which is hardware, so no update will work.
I believe that the Curve 8320 is already EDGE capable. If that's so, with 3G, the data would be EDGE and not GPRS. EDGE is a 3G wireless broadband technology. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Not at all. It is very few phones known planned to work on the 1700 band. There was a rumor that the HTC Touch Cruise could possibly do it but you know the good people at the FCC.
