Well is this better than nothing at this point. It is new and started yesterday.

Effective 01/19/2010, Verizon Wireless supports Inter-Carrier Long Message Delivery. Messages sent with a message length of more than 160 characters to customers on other carriers will now be delivered in their entirety (up to 1120 characters) in multiple message segments

How this will work with a BB device, I am not sure as it appears to stop typing @ 160 characters. This might work better with the 5.0 OS.

Keep in mind that special characters and signatures, may be removed form the the text.

I'd be really interested to see how they fix this on the BB's. It will probably take an OS upgrade cause now, even with 5.0, the phone stops is at 160.

Some phone support EMS - extended Message service and some did not. Motorola was always pretty good about it.

Awesome! Hopefully, they address the limitation of typing 160 on the handheld next.

My previous phone was an LG Voyager and would do this. I was shocked to find out the BB I paid nearly $600 for wouldn't. Supposedly there are apps out there that simulate this on a BB, but you have to purchase them.

One must remember that everyone doesn't have unlimited text messaging.
Doing this to someone could eat up messages and push them over their limit.

People should be careful and only use this with someone that they know has unlimited text and no email capability.

    I'm now off my soapbox.

There's also MMS. It allows you to text more than 160 characters.

Going over 160 characters just kind of defeats the purpose of SMS (SHORT message service)

However, not everyone with whom I need to have a long conversation 1) has access to email on their phone, 2) can receive MMS on their phone, 3) is near a computer, 4) is in a position that they can speak on the phone.

Sometimes long SMS conversations are the only viable option. It's not always as simple as people saying 1) just use MMS, 2) just send an email, 3) just pick up the phone and call them.

I've had the ability to text over 160 to VZW customers all along and am excited about this new ability. I'm running a Palm 755 however while I research if I want to move to a BB or not. Haven't tried this new ability as of yet.

Must be something else ,since I tried what you suggested and still have the same 160 sms text limit as I did before.

PS: also as an added note I am on 4.5.0.138 OS the last official released OS for the 8330 (no 5.0 OS offered from vzw for 8330 ,yet) and reading the entire thread it seems like on the SmS text it would not matter what OS you used as long it was the official one from vzw since "both"(both ,meaning the OS and SmS text capacity) are dealing with no one except VZW (it's all under their control ) .Not a major deal but since I found this thread I was kinda bummed that it hasn't changed anything on my SmS messages

Exactly! I certainly dont want to read a novel from someone about something stupid that so and so did with you know who about that thing. If your message needs to be that long, type me an email, or call me. Although Im starting to hate phone calls and talking on the phone in general.

Just curious what the difference is if someone types a long email or a long sms? You still have to read it
