My plan at tmo provides 7gb of Hotspot per billing cycle and I just realized I could tether via usb/bluetooth. My question is if I am tethering and not using my phone as a Hotspot, is the tethering data being used from my mobile data or my Hotspot data bucket?

I have the simple choice unlimited plan.

Tethering is treated like a hotspot.

Personally I rather tether over USB just for security and to keep the phone charged.

If you go to
http://ma.t-mobile.com
You can see your usage. If you click on "detailed", it has a box for hotspot. Tethering is under the hotspot category.

If you phone has HDMI out, a lot of things you would do with a tether can be done on the phone.

For some reason, it wouldn't work for me being plugged in. I would rather plug in so the data won't be taken from my Hotspot bucket.

It is all the same bucket. Hotspot or tether is the same as far as Tmo is concerned.

On windows, bblink has some means to turn on the tether. I haven't tethered windows in a long time so I rather not be the one to comment. I tether linux. Bb10 supports ethernet over USB directly. No apps on the phone or programs on the linux PC other than the network manager are required.
