Just keep the plan you have on Telus. Unless you're planning on signing several new contracts in the not-so-close future, why are you so concerned?

That's what Canadian Carriers are all about!!! Can't wait for you guys to have WIND available everywhere.
I'll start by apologizing for th elength of this post, but I'm taking the time to do this in the hope that it might be of some value to others if Telus does decide to unilaterally raise our rates.
Telus is a signatory to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association's Code of Conduct for Wireless Service Providers, which was adopted by them on or about August 13, 2009. The portion dealing with consumer rights would seem to apply to a unilateral rate increase and states as follows:
"Protect our customers’ rights when we must change contract terms
We do not change the material terms of our contracts with customers, without giving them at least 30 days’ notice. In the case of such material changes that are unfavourable to customers, we either give them the right to terminate the contract without any additional fees for early termination, or allow them to remain on the unchanged contract. This does not apply to changes that are required by law or regulation or changes to those services and features that do not have a fixed term commitment."
If you're interested in the details, go to the following link:
CWTA - Code of Conduct
If Telus does give notice of a rate increase, I'd take the position that any such unilateral increase would be a "material change" that is certainly "unfavourable". Long story short, if I get that notice, I'm telling Telus I won't accept the change or, even better, I'll terminate my contract with no ETF! In any event, I'd suggest anyone getting hit with this should definitely take the position that they're violating their Code of Conduct.
By the way, if you do get hit with an issue you can't work out with Telus, then don't forget the following provision in the Code, which reminds everyone of the CRTC complaints resolution process:
"Resolve your complaints efficiently, fairly and courteously
When you have a complaint we try to resolve the issue the first time you call, write or e-mail our company. If that’s not possible, we try to find a solution within 30 days or as soon as we can under the circumstances.
If after this you still feel that we have not adequately addressed your concerns, you can lodge a complaint with the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services Inc. (CCTS), an independent third-party complaints resolution service. Information about the CCTS is available at Welcome | Bienvenue CCTS-CPRST or by calling 1-888-221-1687."
Good luck everyone!
As this seems to affect only CDMA plans, I'm thinking they want to turn off the old network ASAP.
Bad idea though. If they want people to switch over to hspa, they should use honey instead of vinegar.
WIND wont be expanding any time soon, their only home zones are Toronto, and Calgary, and the CRTC wont let them put up any more towers to expand, so for anyone who will wait out till WIND gets better, it wont be for a long long time
What are you talking about? Wind is launching in Vancouver, Edmonton and Ottawa in this Quarter.
there was a story on cbc a few months ago about telus merging with bell in the next two years if wind becomes real player in the cell market, and i think its only a matter of time befor it happens, telus and bell share the network and built it and share eachothers towers so it seems like a good fit i think.
Woo. This means I get to cancel my contract early with ETF. Good stuff.
2 questions:
1 Has anyone actually received a notice yet?
2. Are data fees included under contract, or is it an add on? My contract itself says nothing about data, just voice. Thus, is an increase in data fees perhaps not covered under the CWTA code?
Just wondering... Thanks!

I was wondering that as well.
I recently switched to a combo 45 plan - I hope that isn't included in the increase - though I'd be happy to end my contract early without and ETF if it is.
It feels increasingly difficult to find a great carrier here in Canada. I wish they would go back to giving great deals on phones for 2 year contracts instead of being locked in for 3 years.
I wont be surprised, if im not wrong i think Telus tried to buy BCE some time ago but didn't succeed.
So basically have the plan increase or have my cancel terminated?
Meh looking at the new plans (Clear Choice) and my old plan, I would be saving something like $2-3 if I switched to the clear choice. Lose 50 minutes of talking but I have never gone over my "100 free" anyways :D
I definately would choose the termination, get a new plan and new phone... Not bad if you ask me.
So I'm not sure if this is related to this but I went to my Telus store to ask about this "rate plan increase" for the data plans & the store manager said that it was for the PCS data plans only? He showed me the corporate email & that's what was on it, it didn't say anything about other data plans aka BB plans. I'm just passing on what I heard & read so don't kill me if this is wrong or contrary to what others have heard lol

At the top left of my bill, it says, "On March 4th, 2010, the monthly fee for Call Canada 30, Nationwide 30, North America 35, or Unlimited Web, Email and Instant Messaging will increase by $5." This blows.
ya they tried to buy bell but from what i heard the crtc is what ****ed that up for telus. and its funny now that a former telus ceo is now the ceo of bell or was last i checked
Well, its happening. I just got the text this morning about the raise of $5. Whats the plan now boys.
Is this rate increase only affecting people on the new network? Some have posted about receiving notifications on their bill and you got a text. I just renegotiated my contract with Telus and specifically inquired of 3 different reps with Loyalty & Retention whether or not a rate increase of any kind was coming. All said no and I've received no notifications whatsoever. Is is possible this is only impacting clients on the new network?
Regardless, I'm still of the view that any unilateral rate hike is contrary to the code of conduct as per my earlier post in this thread. If they plan to raise your fees, then make a copmplaint, cite the code and either refuse the rate increase or request that your contract be canceled with no ETF. Failing all else, make a complaint to the Commissioner - see post 4 in this thread for the link. Either way, I don't think anyone should allow Telus to get away with this without challenge - what could be next?
Good luck!
Hmmm I have never gotten anything from them.
What plan are you currently on if you don't mind me asking.
I'm on the CDMA network with an unlimited email IM & Web 30, and moreover I'm hesitant to make any sort of a fuss because my account *sigh* is an employee account (and i'm not an employee anymore) and I don't wanna cancel cause I like my plan for the most part and my number's been with me for almost 6 years now.....
Also, reading the CWTA - Code of conduct, "This does not apply to changes that are required by law or regulation or changes to those services and features that do not have a fixed term commitment."
I'm betting you thats what they're going to use as a defense because I recall way back when I got my contract there was some talk about my data plan having an expiry date or something...thats probably not the case but I distinctly recall something about that..
Well I just called Telus to see if they could give me any information on my plan and whether or not it will be affected - the rep is telling me that they have no knowledge of any plans being raised by $5 for existing clients and saying that they would never do that - which is a joke because they obviously have and clients have been notified.
Yea I just called them too, spoke with a guy in quebec by the sounds of it and he said he hasn't heard anything about it and being that all aspects of my plan are grandfathered, they will remain as such. Period. And of course i'm sure he'll note why I called so I can use that as leverage. But, I'm going to post a screenshot of tihs text just so everyone can believe me when I say what I say.
As promised, here you go, received at 10:26 AM PST
so if they do this can we cancel the contract with no penalties?
i think its a very stupid move by them.
