I was under the impression that this phone wasn't, and thought it was quite clear that the 9550 did not have this capability. However I was reading this article and it says that it does.
I thought it was only the 9520 that had that, not the 9550.
The only difference between the 9520 & 9550 is that the 9550 also has a radio for CDMA. Otherwise they are the same. The 9550 is a world phone and will work on the 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA networks among others.

i only get edge on at&t as shown but i have heard of 3G bands on gsm being blocked rather than being omited. if someone knows the true deal, please step up and speak lol
i would love the option to go to at&t on 3g if i wish

That has been said a number of times, but for now, it is an unconfirmed rumor.
- They have a "3G+" tab for smart phones that run on the new HSPA network, and the Storm 9550 is not on it...
- They also have a "smarphones" tab and the Storm 9550 is on this one...
Also looking under the specifications of the phone itself it'll tell you that it runs on CDMA.
I also talked to a Telus rep. and he confirmed this.
The 9550 is a dual mode phone.
It is only capable of HSPA on the 2100Mhz band, for Europe and Asia.
North America uses 850/1900Mhz, those bands are not there, or locked down by RIM.
I think it was CX who once posted a comment stating that all bands are present but blocked at the carrier request (for obvious reasons).
One wonders if the 9520 has access to american 3g netoworks (world capable), then why would rim go through the trouble of making 2 phones with 2 separately spec'd GSM radios? I dont know but my money is that its blocked rather than omitted.
And if my hunch is correct and it is blocked, how would one unblock it in order to have more freeedom with the device?
that's too bad. I have been agonizing over to get this or the Hero for some time, and if this was able to access the Telus HSDPA network that probably would have pushe dit over the top.
Glad I found this. I've been trying to figure out the deal with Telus and the 9550 for a while. The Storm 2 is operating on 3G networks in the U.S., so I'm not sure why Telus has restricted it to their CDMA network in Canada. Are they reserving their 3G bandwidth for selected devices, and does that mean Bell will do the same thing when (if) they begin carrying the Storm 2? This is unfortunate, because I was totally sold on the Storm 2 until I realized this.

umm, their cdma network is 3G. its exactly the same as the the first storm

The S2 is not supported by any 3G networks in North America, only in Europe!
There is no difference between the GSM frequencies supported by the 9550 and 9520.

thats sorta misleading. the Bell/Telus/Verizon CDMA network IS 3G.
You should say the Storm 2 is not supported by any NA hspa/umts 3G bands
The only devices Telus is explicitly listing as 3G are those devices running on its HSPA network (i.e. the iPhone, the BB 9700 & the HTC Hero) - the Storm 2 isn't identified as a 3G device (See Telus website here: Phones | TELUS Mobility )
Really? Telus identifies the network as just "CDMA" (which is 2G, no?), not as any of the 3G variants of CDMA (such as CDMA2000 1X, CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev. 0, CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev. A, and CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev. B). I don't see what interest they'd have in knowingly obscuring a selling point if they were actually running the Storm 9550 on a 3G network.

And they actually list the HSPA devices as 3G+ not 3G
