I have been with HTC for the past 5 years....
I actually transferred over to blackberry last month. And I was wondering if you can actually unlock your blackberry so you can edit or put different provider roms or whatever....?

Welcome to CrackBerry.
Read Only Memory (ROM) is an older technology, not used in the BlackBerry devices.
BlackBerrys use Flash memory, read and write with the ability to retain data without power.
The big advantage is Flash memory is replaceable code. When an updated application or system file is available, it is simple to update the device.
