If I get a phone on the new network (ie: bold 9700) and lose my unlimited data plan.. does wifi usage count as "data" or is it pretty much like free internet? I mean obviously I pay for it for my computers etc, so if I'm picking it up on my phone... does it take from my data plan?

Afaik it doesn't take from your data plan because it tunnel's to RIM, and RIM authorizes your router to route data to/from your phone using the WiFi. Hope that makes sense/helps.

Thanks! So it's basically like using wifi on my laptop, but smaller.

Correct! That's the benefit of using Wifi versus your data plan. Wifi usage is considered completely seperate.

For the past 3 weeks I've been using 20-50Mb per day on my new iPhone.
I bought and installed a router on Friday so I could use wifi instead of eating up my Telus data.

    Today I have used 0.0002Mb. (2 kilobytes)
