I live in the Extended Network, and so I actually spend most of my time on Sprint (blech) and a local CDMA network, which can be somewhat unreliable. I was wondering if I switched to a global phone with GSM capabilities, I would be able to take advantage of the fact that various GSM networks in my area may be stronger than the CDMA networks I have access to.

Or is this something that only works outside the US?

    Any input appreciated!

With VZW global phones, they will only work GSM outside the us.

The Tour 9630 and the Bold 9650 and the Storm1 9530 and the Storm2 9550 will work on GSM in the US, but not in the manner that the OP is suggesting.

To the OP, you would need to actually switch to a GSM carrier and get a SIM card from them and use it in a "Global device" to do what you are asking.

Thanks, guys! So, basically, as I have no plans to depart the country, there's no benefit to my upgrading to a global phone? I'm not switching to a GSM carrier any time soon (or, well, ever, since I've been living in the Extended Network for six years now, and if I was going to do it, I would have by now!), so I'll make do.

    Thanks for the input!
