During the recent blackberry outage, I could not even get data over my wifi at my house. Was I doing something wrong (like have the wrong browser setting), or does blackberry have to be operational to even get data from wifi?

You will get grayed out wifi meaning that you can get data on any non-blackberry applications

apparently you have to switch over the defult browser to HotSpot when on WiFi, this is what i was told by a Rogers Tech, but when im at home usually and on the browser the WiFi logo is there, so im not sure if they are right or not

I do not see why you should not get the Internet with no Blackberry service. I have an AT&T curve with no SIM card and it does my home web perfectly!

I say it is not so.

Greyed out wifi means its connected but hasn't established connection with RIM servers which are requIred whether on gsm or wifi.
