I just heard that Verizon is going to start making anyone with any kind of smart phone, add a full $30.00 monthly data package.

I don't know if it is true, but my source is someone who owns several mom and pop non corporate but specific Verizon stores.

Not all kinds of phones. 3G media phones, those with advanced browsers, require data plans. They are 9.99 for $25 MB with .20 overage or 29.99 unlim. Regular phones can have pay as you go or above.

Any smartphone or PDA, requires 29.99 plan or 44.99 for BES, Activesync Exchanfe, or wireless sync options.

BB has, and will continue to always have a mandatory data plan. There are some smartphones on Verizon that do not. They were grandfathered in before the mandated data plan.

All smart phones made after, I think, November of 2008, have required a $30 data plan. I had bought a palm centro off of ebay and it was made before November 08 so I had a choice of going with the pay per mb or the $30 a month data plan. The new 3G multimedia phones like the lg touch now require a 9.99 25mb data plan, or you can go for the 29.99 unlimited plan.

Yes they have. If you are refering to 3G Multimedia phones like the enV Touch, Rogue, Alias2 and others, then yes that is sorta new. And your choices are 9.99 or 29.99. They are not Smartphones however, which you did not make clear.

Check with your employer, as some companies have contract pricing/discounts extended to their employees for Verizon services.

Doesnt matter when the phone was made, matters when you start service. had to be a cst before Nov 08

actually it matters when the phone was made, someone could start service with a Motorola Q using equipment they already had and not have the data plan because it wasn't required on that phone. When the phone launched is the determining factor although data is suggested for all smartphones.

If you're upgrading (getting subsidary pricing) than it doesn't matter the device. BUT if you buy like a VX6900 or a Q on eBay and activate it, it doesn't not require a data plan.

It will be for a lot more phones then just smart phones. It will include any phone that has email and data capabilities.

I know what you said, that was incorrect. Someone can start service right now with a treo 700p and not have data because that phone doesn't require it. The requirement on smartphones is linked to the phone, not the service itself. So it doesn't matter when the service was started, what matters is when the phone was launched. If it was launched before Nov 08 then it doesn't require data, regardless of when service was started.

So then how come when I activated the phone in May 2009, I had the option to choose the pay per mb plan, the $30, or the $45 plan? And I was able to choose the pay per mb plan! It has to do when the phone was made, of course that applies to non blackberry smartphones. I don't know how long its been since blackberrys have needed data plans.
