You might get a better response in the Tour forum.. just a bunch of bickering and political talk here!
No kidding - I think I will go hang in the Sprint or AT&T forums.
Or the site everyone knows how to bicker on - ars.

It was too difficult to admit, much less explain.
He (gasp) read the manual.

BB tethering is not available with Macs
Wow... yes it is. Called a DUN connection.

If he's trying to use VZ Access Manager to connect his Tour, with a Mac...No, the software is not available.
If he's trying to some seperate 3rd party, it may be entirely possible...but VZW will not assist in setting up or troubleshooting.
Using VZ Access Manager the only devices compatible with Macs are standard handsets and data cards.
VZAccess Manager
Well that's if you use VZAM, but you can use a DUN now that Mac has a desktop manager. I've assisted several people setting up a BB to tether with a mac.

Again...if using VZAM no...
anything else...VZW will not/should not assist in setting up...especially with Bluetooth setup
Why not? Its a simple DUN setup. Customers willing to pay $30 should be assisted.

Maybe if the Rep is clueless about macs and have no desire to help someone I could see where they'll use the "it's not supported" line.

Because its outside of the scope of our troubleshooting...and opens the door to a slew of other questions and troubleshooting for products we should not be fixing...
I've gotten way too many calls from customers asking me to help them because their cd drive isnt working, or some random windows error message, but because they have a data card or netbook...they believe VZW should also service their computer.
I don't think helping someone setup a DUN is going to open the door near as much as selling them a netbook. Just because its not in your troubleshooting guide doesn't mean we cannot help the customer. You have to explain to the customer that it isn't something we normally support, but will help them with setting it up. All VZ Access manager does is provides a connection interface for tethering. It creates a DUN and manages it. Samething you would be setting up.
Those people are going to continue calling in regardless if you helped 1 person tether a mac..

most likely we're not gonna see eye to eye on this...
Curious - what level of customer service or tech do you work in?
I'm interested in knowing this as well... Boise?
Setting up a DUN is a very basic procedure, and I would certainly hope any internal VZW rep would not only know how to guide a customer through setting one up, but would be willing to as well...
Its not only useful for customers with Macs, but for the occasional scenarios where customers don't have their access software and need to go to VZAM.net to download it, but don't have the internet connection to do so. What are you going to do? Tell them you can't assist them because you don't support (or don't know how to support) non VZAccess Manager connections? NO. Set up a DUN connection... Or at least transfer them to someone who knows what to do...
Data Tech Support, with Blackberry Technician certification...
Believe me, I'm fully aware of how to set up a DUN connection...but I do not assist any customers with doing it, unless there is an ultimate issue with VZAM. So with doing via Bluetooth on a Mac...i refer them back to Apple for assistance.
I wouldnt call Comcast to assist me with setting up a wireless router for my Laptop...all they are providing for me is the signal...its up to me to choose what I do with it...
